Canggu: The Digital Nomad & Surf Hub

The trendy west-coast strip where cafes, surf, scooters and beach clubs collide. Loved by first-timers and long-stayers alike.

Canggu is where most foreigners end up first, and often spend most of their Bali trip. It is laid-back, walkable (by Bali standards), packed with good food, and has a beach break that works for beginners and intermediates. Do not expect white-sand postcard beaches - the sand here is volcanic grey - but the lifestyle and scene make up for it.

Local tip
If you want a quieter, more residential feel, stay in Pererenan or Nyanyi. Berawa is the glitziest and most expensive. Batu Bolong is the middle-ground with the best walk-to-cafes ratio.

The three main sub-areas

Batu Bolong is the heart of Canggu. Echo Beach, Old Man’s, the morning-market scene, The Lawn at sunset. This is where most short-term visitors stay because everything is a scooter-free walk away.

Berawa is the polished side. Finns Beach Club, big villas, organic supermarkets, gyms and co-workings. More expensive per night but you get the more resort-style villa experience.

Pererenan and Nyanyi are calmer, a little further from the crowds, with great boutique cafes like Secret Spot and a nicer surf break when it works. Perfect for second-time visitors.

Best beaches in Canggu

Batu Bolong Beach and Echo Beach are the two main beach strips, lined with beach cafes. They are good for sunset, average for swimming (strong rips), very good for learning to surf on the white water in the morning.

Berawa Beach is wider and quieter. Nyanyi Beach is more local-feeling with warungs right on the sand and almost no tourists. Pererenan Beach has a more powerful surf break than Batu Bolong.

Food scene (what to actually book)

Cafe classics: Cafe Organic and Crate for brunch, Shelter for healthier lunch, Nude for dinner, Secret Spot for a more local boutique feel. For warung food, Warung Varuna on Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong is excellent value. La Brisa and The Lawn are the must-hit sunset beach clubs.

Dinner recommendation for a special night: Mason (modern, great cocktails) or Barbacoa (South American, big steaks). Cheap and extremely local: warung Bu Made, nasi campur for around Rp 30.000.

Where to stay by budget

Backpacker ($15-30/night): Lost Paradise, Mad Monkey, many private rooms in small guesthouses on Jl. Nelayan.

Mid-range ($50-120/night): Coconut Grove, Serenity Eco Guesthouse, private villas with pool on Airbnb in Pererenan.

Higher end ($150-400+/night): COMO Uma Canggu, The Slow, private villas from The Bali Villa Agents.

Is Canggu right for you?

Yes if: you want cafes, surf, trendy scene, walkable lifestyle, easy food, and you do not mind traffic. Perfect for a first Bali trip 7-10 days.

No if: you want a cultural deep-dive (go Ubud), clear-water swimming beaches (go Nusa Dua or Sanur), or world-class surf for intermediates/advanced (go Uluwatu).

Getting around Canggu

Scooter is by far the easiest. Rent from any small shop for around Rp 70.000 to Rp 100.000 per day. A private driver makes more sense only for day trips outside Canggu. Grab/Gojek work in Canggu but traffic can make them slower than walking on the main cafe strip.
