Sanur is the east-coast alternative to the busy west coast. The vibe is older, calmer, and more residential - a lot of return visitors and retirees. Sunrise over the reef, flat turquoise water for swimming, and the best seafront cycling path on the island. It is also the main departure point for Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands, which makes it a strategic 2-3 night base if you are island-hopping.
The Sanur beach path
A paved 7 km beachfront promenade runs from Inna Bali Beach Hotel in the north to Mertasari Beach in the south. You can rent a bike (around Rp 30.000 a day) and cycle the whole thing in 40 minutes. Beach warungs, seafood restaurants, and gelato stops line it the whole way. Best time to cycle: just after sunrise.
Best beaches
Matahari Terbit Beach - the sunrise spot. Traditional jukung boats line the sand.
Sindhu Beach - the most central, closest to restaurants.
Mertasari Beach - the quieter south end, better for families, big tree for shade.
The reef a few hundred metres offshore means almost no waves and very safe swimming. It is the main reason Sanur is the #1 family-friendly Bali base.
Food
Massimo (the institution for pasta and gelato), Soul on the Beach, Bamboo Bar, Batu Jimbar Cafe for a healthier breakfast, Char Ming for dinner.
Warung classics: Warung Mak Beng (legendary fish soup), Warung Pregina. Night market near Pasar Sindhu is great for cheap grilled seafood.
Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Gili from Sanur
Sanur is the main fast-boat harbour for all three. Operators like Maruti, Caspla, Scoot and Idola run multiple daily departures. Typical prices: Penida/Lembongan return around Rp 250.000-400.000, Gili Trawangan return around Rp 900.000-1.300.000.
The new Sanur harbour (Pelabuhan Sanur) has made the whole process much cleaner - ATMs, cafes, covered waiting area. No more wading to the boat.
