Ubud: Rice Terraces, Yoga & Jungle Culture

Ubud: Rice Terraces, Yoga & Jungle Culture

Bali’s cultural and wellness capital. Jungle villas, yoga shalas, local art, classic rice terrace scenery - and a busy centre that is more touristy than people expect.

Ubud is inland, cooler, and greener than the coast. It has a serious yoga and wellness scene, excellent healthy food, stunning jungle villas, and some of Bali’s best temples and rice terraces on the doorstep. The central town is much more crowded and commercial than most first-timers expect - the magic is in the villages just outside.

Local tip
Stay outside the main one-way street if you can. Penestanan, Sayan and Kedewatan give you jungle or valley views, cooler air, and are still a 10-minute scooter from Ubud centre.

The must-see sights

Tegallalang Rice Terraces (photo classic, arrive before 09:00), Sacred Monkey Forest (in central Ubud, 90 minutes is plenty), Tirta Empul Water Temple (holy spring purification, bring a sarong), and Campuhan Ridge Walk (free, early morning walk, 2 hours round trip).

A bit further but worth it: Tukad Cepung Waterfall (light beams in the cave mid-morning), Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), and the pottery/ceramic villages of Pejeng.

Yoga in Ubud

The big names: The Yoga Barn (the OG, loud, vibrant, hit-or-miss depending on teacher), Radiantly Alive (more polished, smaller classes, excellent teacher lineup), and Intuitive Flow (tiny studio in Penestanan with a loyal following).

Drop-in class is usually Rp 150.000 (about $10). Most studios do a 5 or 10 class pack at discount. Consider a retreat (3-7 days) only if you want deep focus - otherwise it is cheaper to stay in a boutique hotel and drop into classes yourself.

Food and cafes

Healthy: Alchemy, Moksa, Sayuri. Boutique: Locavore (fine dining, book weeks ahead), Mozaic (classic), Room 4 Dessert. Classic warung: Warung Biah Biah, Ibu Oka (the famous babi guling). Coffee: Seniman, F.R.E.A.K. Coffee.

Where to stay

Budget ($20-50): family-run homestays on Jl. Bisma or in Penestanan. You get a breakfast-included room with a pool for almost nothing.

Mid ($80-200): boutiques like Alaya Resort, Komaneka, or villas with private pool on the outskirts.

Higher end ($250-800+): the big names - Four Seasons Sayan, Amandari, Capella, Bisma Eight, Hanging Gardens. This is where Ubud shines.

How many days?

Two nights is the bare minimum. Three is better. A week is very doable if you are a yoga/wellness person or want a slow, cultural Bali trip without beaches.

Getting to and from Ubud

Airport to Ubud is 60-90 minutes in normal traffic, 2 hours at peak. A private driver is around Rp 400.000. Ubud to Canggu is about 1h15 (Rp 350.000). Ubud to Uluwatu is 1h45-2h (Rp 500.000+). Traffic inside Ubud central is genuinely bad between 10:00 and 18:00.
