Bali Visa on Arrival + SIM Card: The Simple Guide

The two things you MUST sort in the first hour after landing.

VoA (on arrival)
Rp 500.000 (~$35)
e-VoA (online)
~Rp 550.000
Length
30 days, extendable once +30
B211A (longer)
60/120/180 days

Bali visa rules have changed a lot in the last 3 years. This page is kept up to date for 2026. Most tourists from 90+ countries can get a 30-day Visa on Arrival (VoA). For stays over 60 days, you need a B211A visit visa. Getting a local SIM is the single best $5 you will spend on the trip - data is fast and cheap.

Local tip
If you already know you will stay more than 30 days, apply for an e-VoA from home on evisa.imigrasi.go.id before flying. Cheaper than extending later and you walk straight through the e-gate.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

If you are from one of 90+ eligible countries (US, UK, all EU, Australia, NZ, Japan, Korea, etc.) you can buy a VoA on arrival at Ngurah Rai Airport or any major entry point.

Cost: Rp 500.000 (~$35). Pay with card or USD cash. Valid 30 days from date of entry, extendable once for another 30 days at an immigration office.

Requirements: passport valid for at least 6 months, a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation or funds. Rarely strictly checked but keep the info handy.

e-VoA (apply before flying)

Same visa as VoA but applied online in advance via evisa.imigrasi.go.id (Rp ~550.000). The advantage: you skip the counter queue at the airport and walk straight to the e-gate with your passport. Saves 30-60 minutes after a long flight. Highly recommended.

Extending your VoA

Go to the Denpasar immigration office 7-10 days before your visa expires. Bring your passport, a printed e-VoA or VoA receipt, a printed return flight, and an hour of patience. Cost: about Rp 500.000 through an agent, Rp 250.000 DIY (requires 2-3 visits).

Most people use an agent in Canggu or Ubud (Rp 1.0-1.5 million including all fees, takes the stress out). WhatsApp us and we will recommend one.

B211A visit visa (for longer stays)

If you plan to stay 60+ days, get a B211A through an agent before flying in. It gives you 60 days extendable twice (total 180 days in one entry). Cost via agent: $200-350. Agents take care of photos, sponsor letter, application. This is the standard for digital nomads without a KITAS.

Best SIM cards at the airport

Telkomsel - the biggest network, best coverage in Ubud and rural Bali. Tourist package: ~Rp 150.000 for 15GB + unlimited apps for 15 days.

XL Axiata - slightly cheaper, great speeds in Canggu and the coastal strip, a bit weaker in rural areas.

Smartfren - cheapest but smallest coverage; fine for south Bali only.

Buy at the official counters inside Ngurah Rai arrivals hall. They will install and activate the SIM for you. Avoid the touts in the parking lot.

eSIM alternatives

Airalo, Holafly and Nomad all sell Indonesia eSIMs you can activate before flying. More expensive per GB than a local SIM but easier if your phone is eSIM-only (e.g. US iPhone 14+). If you are staying more than 10 days, a physical local SIM is still the cheapest and fastest option.
